PLAINVILLE - Corey Martel, owner of Martel Music at 1 Whiting St., will hold his grand opening June 10, aiming to make his store the “go to place for musicians.”
Martel Music Store’s grand opening will feature performances from local and regional musicians, product demonstrations, door prizes, giveaways and raffles. Local businesses Relic Brewery and Rebel Dog Coffee will also be there to show their support and serve beer and coffee throughout the day.
Martel opened the store, his first business, two months ago. He said that music is in his blood.
“Growing up, my grandfather owned a store in Pittsburgh, Mass.,” he said. “I previously worked in New Jersey for a big corporate store and then worked at a small boutique here in Connecticut. I built up my connections and decided it was time to break out on my own.”
Martel said musicians like to be able to come into his store and connect with an instrument rather than just being pressured into making a purchase.
“They want to feel its weight and hear its tone, drool over it,” he said.
Martel said his store carries instruments ranging from acoustic and electric guitars to saxophones. Guitar brands include Vox, Wagner, Guild, Fame, Bad Cat, Huss & Dalton, Bilt and others. The store offers sales, trades, consignment and repairs, all in house. Martel said he also works with a half-dozen instructors who offer music lessons.
So far, Martel said business in Plainville has been great. In addition to receiving support from Relic Brewery and Rebel Dog, he thanked Mark Devoe, town director of Planning and Economic Development for helping him get set up.
“Those two months have gone by fast,” he said. “People are coming in for lesions and we are doing a lot of sales and repairs. I think people like that they are supporting a store that isn’t a giant corporation. We have a different vibe here; we’re more of a welcoming environment. When people come in we have free drinks in the cooler and a TV on playing music. I plan to hold monthly jam sessions here in the store that will be open to the public. We have a lot of space which we can grow into.”
Martel noted that he has also spoken to teachers from the music programs at Plainville High School and the Middle School of Plainville about doing instrument rentals.
