NEW BRITAIN - The Greater New Britain Arts Alliance will soon put out a call for sponsors for 6-foot-tall bee sculptures, to be placed around town.

Bees Across New Britain is an art project launched earlier this year by Mayor Erin Stewart in conjunction with the Greater New Britain Arts Alliance.

Twenty-five sculptures are expected to appear across New Britain in the spring, according to Stephen Hard, director of the arts alliance.

The project was announced in May to attract public interest and potential sponsorships. Hard said nine sponsors have committed so far, and he hopes to get 16 more by the middle of December.

He added that sponsorships will be solicited soon by mail and phone, He said he wanted to wait until after the election to contact businesses.

There are two levels of sponsorship: $2,000 and $2,500. For $2,000, sponsors get their names on the bases of the sculptures. The $2,500 sponsors will also have their names affixed but will be allowed to keep the bees.

Once sponsorships are secured, a call to artists will be made. Hard said that, by the end of December or early January, he hopes to have selected a group of high-quality artists with the help of a committee.

Artists will be encouraged to paint the bee inspired by the business, but will be given liberty to express their artistic imagination.

Those interested in sponsoring a bee can contact Hard at 860-832-8299 or gnbaa@newbritainarts.org.
