NEW BRITAIN – After last year’s success with “Mary Poppins,” the YWCA of New Britain’s Youth Theater will offer a show again this year, this time “The Little Mermaid Jr.,” Friday and Saturday at Trinity-on-Main.

Friday’s performance will take place at 7 p.m. and Saturday’s at 2.

The production is being directed and by Jason Ferrandino, produced by Sandy Butler and choreographed by Christine Kuzia, the YWCA’s performing arts director. Twenty children, 10 to 16 years old, from from New Britain, Berlin, Bristol, Wolcott, Southington and Plainville, make up the cast.

The YWCA Youth Theater started last summer.

“We are hoping to build this into an annual event,” Kuzia said. “We are hoping to grow our youth theater program too at the Y and then eventually expand it into an adult theater program.”

Rehearsals started May 9. Children rehearsed three days a week, then every night the week of the show.

One of the reasons Kuzia encourages the program is that it teaches children work ethic, and self-esteem. It also teaches them about being in theater, staging a show, how to sing and project.

The Little Mermaid “is someone who does not feel she fits in where she is supposed to ‘belong,’” Kuzia said. “Ariel loves her family and friends very much but she is not happy where she is and dreams of joining ‘the world above.’”

Tickets are $10 each.
