BERLIN - The Parks and Recreation Department is accepting registration for its annual Youth Fishing Derbies at its office at 230 Kensington Road.
Preregistration is required to participate in the derbies and to fish at the pond through the end of May.
The derbies will be held at Sage Park Pond from 8 to 10 a.m., Saturday, April 22, for children 3 to 7, and Saturday, April 29, for children 8 to 15. They are limited to Berlin residents, and children 3 to 10 must be accompanied by an adult.
The deadline to register and receive an identification card is the Friday before the event. The Parks and Recreation Department closes at 1 p.m. on Fridays.
The card must be carried at all times while fishing at the pond. All participants are eligible for prizes, but must be present when winners are announced.
There is a limit of five fish per child and only one fishing pole in the water.
The event will be held even in rainy weather.
From April 22 to May 31, only 3- to 15-year-old Berlin residents are allowed to fish at Sage Park Pond. The pond is closed to the public on April 21 and 28. All other uses of the pond for fishing during this time are prohibited.
The Parks and Recreation Department is also teaming up with Jim Shirley and the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection to offer the Connecticut Aquatic Resources Education program. This free program helps educate families about fish and fishing.
The program will be held on April 27 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Berlin Community Center, for children 8 and older.
Registration is required and can be done online or at the Parks and Recreation Department.
Parents and children must to register individually.
