BERLIN - Local detectives nabbed two New Britain men as they were attempting to steal rims from a truck parked at a local car dealership early Saturday, police said.

Detectives had Tasca car dealership on Webster Square Road under surveillance Friday night after a string of thefts at the business, Deputy Chief Christopher Ciuci said.

During the surveillance, Sam Harris, 19, of 594 Burritt St., and Dwayne Mitchell, 29, of 127 Jubilee St., were spotted trying to steal the rims off a truck just after 12 a.m., Ciuci said.

Harris complied with officers when approached but Mitchell fled on foot. He was found by a New Britain police canine team in the woods behind a car wash on nearby Woodlawn Road, Ciuci said. Police will try to determine if the pair has been involved in any other thefts at the car dealership, he said.

“It was a successful surveillance and apprehension,” Ciuci said. “Periodically we will put businesses under surveillance. We want people to know that if they are committing crimes in Berlin we will be out there.”

Both men face interfering with police, attempted larceny and conspiracy charges. Mitchell was also charged with cruelty to animals after he struck the police canine as he was being apprehended, Ciuci said. Harris was also charged with possession of marijuana.

Mitchell was held on $5,000 bond until his appearance in New Britain Superior Court today. Harris was released on non-surety bond.
