BERLIN - Firefighters put out a garage fire at 95 Berlin St. Sunday night.

The blaze could be seen and heard from a distance, with neighbors coming to investigate at about 7 p.m.

"I saw flames and the firefighters putting out what was left of the garage," said Edward Lentz, who lives nearby. A car in the garage was charred and the garage itself destroyed.

Firefighters also worked on an entrance on the side of the house, which appeared threatened by the flames. Smoke was still coming from the garage 30 minutes after the blaze was brought under control.

Area residents said they heard an explosion and could see the glow of the fire. Neighbors said someone knocked on the door of the house to make sure everyone had gotten out safely. It was unclear Sunday night if the owners were home when the blaze started.

A neighbor said no one was injured. Firefighters were wrapping up at the scene by 8:10 p.m.

Fire officials were unavailable for comment Sunday night.
