BERLIN - The Public Golf Commission may be getting another member soon.

The Town Council’s Ordinance Committee recently voted to add another seat to the commission.

The committee consists of Mayor Mark Kaczynski and Town Councilors Brenden Luddy, Amy Daniele, Peter Rosso and JoAnn Angelico-Stetson.

“I got a call from an individual who said a group wasn’t represented,” said Kaczynski.

“I think it was a member from the Senior Men’s Club,” said commission Chairman Peter DeFazio.

The commission has seven members, with some coming from different playing groups at Timberlin Golf Course.

DeFazio is president of the Timberlin Men’s Club, and other commissioners are also members. Nancy Berger is president of the Timberlin Lady Niners club, while Gale Lemieux is a past board member of the Timberlin Women’s Club.

The new member would diversify the representation on the commission, said Kaczynski.

“They all know the course,” said Kaczynski.

“We welcome them,” said DeFazio on the expected new representation.

The commission was the idea of former Town Manager Denise McNair and was initiated during the charter revision process in 2016 and brought to action by Kaczynski in 2017.

It was established to oversee Timberlin Golf Course, while reporting to the Town Council, and to help generate revenue from the course, which has been running in the red in recent years.

The course was previously overseen by the Parks and Recreation Commission, which Parks and Recreation Chairman Len Zelienski said had made strides through statistical analysis to improve the course. He didn’t want his commission to lose oversight of the course.

“They’re doing a great job,” said Kaczynski of the new commission.

The Town Council will schedule a public hearing on the ordinance change at its next meeting, on Feb. 6 and then is expected to vote on the ordinance on Feb. 20.

The council meets in the Town Council Chambers of Town Hall, 240 Kensington Road.

DeFazio said he is hoping the council will also soon discuss the new rates for Timberlin Golf Course, 330 Southington Road.

The next Public Golf Commission meeting is Thursday at 6 p.m. at the Berlin Community Center, 230 Kensington Road.
