BERLIN - A car apparently abandoned between railroad tracks was hit by an Amtrak train Sunday morning.

The accident happened near the intersection of Kensington and Norton roads around 7 a.m., said Kensington Fire Chief Jeff Pajor.

The train had just left the Berlin station and was heading south, Pajor said. No one on the train was injured.

The Volkswagen Golf, which Pajor said had been driven from Meriden, was left between the tracks and was sideswiped by the train.

The train conductor noticed the car and tried to brake, but couldn’t stop in time, Pajor said.

The train continued on after a brief delay.

The car was removed by 11 a.m., Pajor said.

“The train engine didn’t have a scratch on it,” added Pajor.
