BERLIN - The town’s Veterans Commission is hosting a free concert Thursday to honor veterans and kick off a new project.

Vinnie Carr and the Party Band will perform from 7 to 8:30 p.m., at Veterans Memorial Park, across from Stop & Shop at 1135 Farmington Lane.

“We want to show off the park,” said Charles Colaresi, chairman of the Veterans Commission.

The group will play songs from the 1940s through the 1960s along with some favorites from today, according to a release announcing the event.

Penn has appeared with groups over the years including Danny and the Juniors, the Impalas, the Five Satins, Joey Dee and the Starlighters and the Drifters.

“Admission is free ... Bring a lawn chair or a blanket and enjoy a trip back to memory lane,” the release stated.

The concert is not a replacement for the Simply Swing concert previously held at the park. Colaressi said he wasn’t sure why that concert didn’t happen this year.

The Veterans Commission is starting a new project for the town.

Instead of having a static wall of nine or 10 photos of veterans in the lobby of Town Hall, Colaresi said, the commission is looking to make a “living” wall of honor.

The “living” wall will consist of video shown on a TV on the wall, of Berlin residents, past and present, who have served in the military.

The idea was sparked by commission Secretary Peter Galgano, who installed a similar project in East Haddam with about 140 photos.

Galgano said Berlin could get 800 to 1,000 photos, some dating back to the Civil War.

The commission is looking for photos and any military history, to go along with them, of any family members to be honored on the wall. The video wall is expected to be up by Veterans Day, and can be updated at any time.

Photos already scanned, along with their military history, can be emailed to Peter Galgano, secretary of the Veterans Commission, at petergalgano@comcast.net
