BERLIN – Police are looking for the culprit who used the “smash and grab” technique to steal two high-end bicycles from the Cutting Edge bicycle and skateboard shop on Mill Street late Sunday.

A video shows the thief using rocks from the parking lot to smash the front window. The man then grabbed a mountain bike and pulled it through the broken window. A second bike that became entangled on the bike that was stolen also came out of the window as the thief was pulling the first bike out. The video shows the man riding away on one bike while carrying the second.

An employee of the store noticed the theft early Monday when he arrived for work. “The employee didn’t at first realize that anything had been taken,” Lt. Drew Gallupe said. “Then they saw the broken glass.”

The thief threw multiple rocks at the front window to get it to break, Gallupe said. “One rock was found 30 feet into the store,” Gallupe said.

The thief was wearing sneakers, a hooded sweatshirt and a baseball cap. Store manager Adam Valedaserra believes the break-in occurred between 9:30 and 10 p.m. Sunday night as a thunderstorm had moved into the area.

The bikes were worth about $900, he said. The store and police released video footage of the burglary in the hope that someone recognizes the man who committed the smash and grab burglary.

Anyone with information is asked to call Berlin police at 860-828-7080.
