NEW BRITAIN - The New Britain – Berlin YMCA Camp Thundermoon is sure to offer a summer of memories that will last a lifetime.

YMCA Camp Thundermoon, which has been around for 34 years in the Berlin community, is coming back this summer.

Camp Thundermoon is offered for nine weeks starting on June 24 and ending on Aug. 23. Camp is held at Willard Elementary School in Berlin.

The camp will incorporate sports and arts camps with specialized activities throughout the day.

The camp includes before and after camp care. The regular camp hours are from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. but children may be dropped off at 7 a.m. for before camp care. After-camp care will be held from 3 to 6 p.m.

Camp Thundermoon is designed for children in Kindergarten through eighth grade. There’s also a Thundermoon Leaders Club, which is a program with the goal of teaching teens skills to become camp councilors and trainers. Thundermoon Leaders Club is a program for high school freshmen and sophomores.

According to Donelle Daigle, youth and family director and youth development at the New Britain and Berlin YMCA, these summer camps are a “peace of mind” that can assure parents that their children will be in a safe environment with a quality program offering entertaining as well as educational activities.

Camp Thundermoon focuses on using the shell of the school to bring camp to life, Daigle said.

The camp also offers activities intended to build up spirit, mind and body. Activities include yoga, musical theater and arts and crafts. Thundermoon also offers STEM activities from the YMCA’s specialized STEM camps. There is a period of the camp day that is dedicated to reading.

Camp Thundermoon incorporates the school’s indoor and outdoor areas to make sure activities expand health and wellness as well. There will be swimming lessons twice a week and three field trips including a movie theater, bowling and a trip to the outdoor area of the Meriden facility.

All of the camp activities are performed around a weekly theme, giving parents the opportunity to choose which weeks would be best for their children to participate in the camp. Children can participate in one week or in all weeks of the camp.

Registration will be open throughout the summer.
