BERLIN-The sounds of smooth jazz and the smells of fresh pastries filled the air at the grand opening of Busy Bean café Monday morning.
Director of Economic Development Chris Edge kicked off the festivities with a brief endorsement of Busy Bean’s owner Tigran Hovhannisyan.
“Tigran has a history of making coffee and making people happy,” Edge said.
The café, located at 355 Main St, has actually been open since February, but it took Edge some time to convince Hovhannisyan to hold a ribbon cutting.
Edge’s words were followed by a short address from Mayor Mark Kaczynski, followed by the ceremonial ribbon cutting.
“The response of everyone I’ve spoken to that’s been here is that they love it,” Kaczynski said.
Busy Bean boasts over 50 flavors of coffee, both hot and iced, and prepared a variety of different ways.
Hot chocolate, tea, cider, ice cream, and fresh fruit smoothies are also available.
Crepes, bagels, sandwiches, and salads are also on the menu, along with a large selection of pastries delivered from New York City every day.
Hoyhannisyan says that such a dynamic selection is part of his efforts to keep things original.
“I like all this to be different,” Hoyhannisyan said while gesturing to his display of tea and pastries. “You won’t see this anywhere else.”
Kevin Semataska was unaware that when he agreed to meet a friend for coffee at Busy Bean that he would be joining in on the grand opening event, but enjoyed the friendly environment.
“It’s always good to have a coffee place in town,” Semataska said. “It feels like a friendly place to be.”
Also in attendance was Dan Balboni, a Berlin resident who claims to be Busy Bean’s first customer.
“When I moved from Newington, I said this town is missing a café,” Balboni said.
Balboni read about the incoming coffee shop in the paper and eagerly awaited its arrival.
“I made darn sure I was going to be the first one there,” Balboni said.
Balboni said that it’s the “community atmosphere” that makes Busy Bean the place to be.
“I love the fact that it has people in town excited, and I hope it’s the start of more in this area,” Edge said.
Outdoor seating will be coming soon to the venue, and Busy Bean is currently seeking new employees.
