NEW BRITAIN – The American Savings Foundation announced the recipients of the Robert T. Kenney Scholarship Monday morning.

With college students facing extra stress as they navigate the college process during a pandemic, ASF has awarded 107 local students a new scholarship that may help make the financial cost less of a concern.

“We are exceptionally proud of this year’s new scholars,” said Maria Falvo, president and CEO of ASF. “Many just graduated from high school and others applied to us while finishing their spring college semester. All of them had their plans disrupted last year, and we hope this scholarship helps make it a little easier to plan for the upcoming school year.”

Students were able to apply as high school seniors, current college students or as non-traditional adult students. Of this year’s first-time recipients, 81 are incoming college freshmen, while 18 are current undergraduate students. An additional four students are adult nontraditional college students.

Scholarships are awarded primarily based on financial need, with consideration given to academic performance, community involvement and other indications of a strong desire to achieve goals through education. This year ASF will award over $750,000 through the Robert T. Kenney Scholarship Program.

Since covid-19 has caused uncertainty for students who planned to re-apply for the scholarship, ASF has given current scholars eligible for a renewal the opportunity to use a simpler renewal process and were also given an extension. As a result, these awards will be announced later in the summer.

“We have an additional 292 current scholars who are eligible to reapply,” said Heather Hokunson, the foundation’s scholarship program officer. “We are working with each student as they determine what their fall plans are. We want to do everything we can to make the renewal of their scholarship one less worry over the summer.”
