BERLIN – Berlin held a ribbon cutting ceremony for Cortney’s Dips & Sauces, a unique new store in town, Wednesday morning.

“This is a darling little shop. It’s very comfortable coming in and you can tell it’s going to be a success. There’s a lot of positive energy and it’s family oriented,” said Bill Moore, Greater New Britain Chamber president.

Cortney Troup, a Berlin resident, was renting space at the VFW in New Britain until business picked up so much that there was a greater need for space and storage. After having her eye on this location for a while the opportunity presented itself.

“We used to get hot dogs here and my friend is the landlord’s niece so I always knew about the space and I kind of dreamt about how perfect it would be,” Troup said. “So I went online and saw that it was free, but he was advertising for office space. I called my friend, she called him, he met with us, I told him my plan, he liked it and the rest is history and it couldn’t be more perfect.”

Troup transformed the former hot dog restaurant located at 1400 Berlin Turnpike, completely cleaning, repainting, remodeling and furnishing it with all new equipment.

“I love the transformation; it doesn’t even feel like the same place. It is customer friendly, appealing and the spread is tremendous,” said Chris Edge, Berlin economic development director.

Cortney’s Dips & Sauces offers dips made from cottage cheese instead of sour cream and mayonnaise.

“So they’re healthy, kid friendly and one of a kind; there’s nothing like it,” Troup said. “We’ve been making this recipe for 40 years; it’s my dad’s onion dip recipe. We started with that and we couldn’t go anywhere without people requesting we bring it.”

Troup prepares small batches of the dips and packages them by hand. The flavors offered include Dill & Spring Onion, Fiery Red Pepper, Strawberries & Cream, Garlic & Herb, Vanilla Cinnamon with Dark Chocolate Chips and Savory Onion & Peppercorn.

“The Red Pepper goes great with tacos and the Strawberry goes great with pancakes, just put a small amount in the batter,” Troup said.

There is also a dip of the week, so each week that flavor changes.

“Canoli is the dip of the week this week,” Troup said.

Due to covid, Cortney’s Dips & Sauces mainly offers curbside pickup on Tuesdays and Thursdays through preorder on the website. There is also free local delivery on Tuesdays to Berlin and surrounding towns.

“It was hard trying to get this location open during the pandemic,” Troup said. “But having this space with just me in it, not having to share and being able to do curbside, I felt like it was very safe for me during this time. I can control who’s in the store.”

Troup is excited to be back and opening in Berlin and hopes later on down the road to become a one stop shop for party hosts and party goers.

“I’m looking forward to partnering with local vendors and maybe some gift shops in town to do maybe pop up holiday events,” Troup said. “But I do want to carry local vendors here so people can come in grab a couple dips, a bag of chips and gifts, especially around the holidays.”
