BERLIN – While the pandemic has put a damper on fun in town, Berlin is looking to bring some excitement and support back by launching a bingo game this Thursday.

“We were thinking about doing something for a couple months,” said Chris Edge, economic development director of Berlin. “This idea came from conversations with a couple of economic development professionals around the state. I believe this was done in the Berkshires so I decided just to run with it.”

The objective of Berlin Bingo is to get five spots in a row, make an X, or fill the whole board just like in regular bingo. The Berlin Bingo board is made up of a free space and 24 different boxes of numbers, each with a task that a participant needs to complete at a business in Berlin.

The tasks include spending money or visiting businesses in town, from fitness, personal services, automotive, services for your home, medical, dental, physical therapy, retail, to food and more.

“The goal is to get as many businesses in town involved as possible,” Edge said, “and also to get people to patronize businesses in town while playing the fun game of bingo.”

Once the task is completed, the business will initial that task and add the date of the purchase. Participants can only get one box signed off per transaction at a business.

“There is no limit to the number of cards that a person or family does,” Edge said, “just that they take the time to check out and patronize businesses in Berlin.”

If someone gets a complete line of five boxes, they receive an entry into a drawing of five different gift cards ranging from $50 up to $250. For an X, 20 spots or the whole board, they receive more entries.

“The gift cards were donated. A big thank you to Schaller Subaru, TASCA Ford of Berlin, Newport Realty Group, Dynasty Jewelers and Kensington Auto Service Ltd,” Edge said. “They were nice enough to make those donations.”

The Bingo Card is available at the town’s website or at participating businesses.

Berlin Bingo will run through Mother’s Day, May 9.

“As the weather gets nicer, more people are feeling comfortable being out and many more being vaccinated, we hope that everyone will jump on board to play Berlin Bingo,” Edge said.
