BERLIN – The town held a ribbon cutting ceremony Wednesday morning for Douglas Mechanical Services, Inc. which has been expanding its business in Berlin.

“We’re a small contractor and we’ve grown quite a lot in the past few years since we’ve moved to Berlin,” said Jill Sturtevant, co-owner.

Douglas Mechanical Services was formally located in Plainville and moved to 820 Four Rod Road in 2016.

“On this side we have all business offices where we process all the paper work, payments and answer the phones,” Sturtevant said. “We never really had anything this big. We came from a little tiny building of 1,500 square feet.”

The business now occupies two sections of the building, with one side they own, totaling about 3,000 square feet, and the other they are leasing totaling about 2,500 square feet.

“Chris Edge was an instrumental part in helping us find this location,” Sturtevant said. “There wasn’t a lot in Plainville so we started reaching out in Berlin because my husband (Doug) grew up here and we wanted to move back and raise our children here in town. So we were fortunate when we bought the building a house became available two streets away from us so it was kind of nice and convenient to be close to work.”

“This is a wonderful example that shows when an opportunity is found, new partnerships are created and amazing careers are launched,” said Edge, economic development director.

Douglas Mechanical Services provides air conditioning and heating installation and services for residential and commercial customers. Technicians are not only experienced with many different commercial brands, but with expanding technologies as well. The company supplies parts and equipment from manufacturers like American Standard, Aprilaire, Buderus, plus many others.

“We have about 15-16 employees, most of them are out in the field doing all the installations or maintenance,” Sturtevant said. “I have a good crew of women in the office; three that answer the phone and then I do all of the bookkeeping, PR.”

In 2020, Douglas Mechanical Services added sheet metal to the business to create duct work and sheet metal for many of its jobs and other small contractors.

“Last year during the start of the pandemic it was getting a little tough trying to find somebody to actually make our duct work. We install it, we can build parts, but trying to rely on somebody else or use their shop or get on a waiting list to have them makeup sheet metal – it just got to the point to where it was time to make the investment,” said Douglas Sturtevant, co-owner.

Despite the pandemic Jill Sturtevant said they did not have any slowdowns.

“It’s either going crazy, especially last June and the fall, or it’s pretty steady,” she said. “We’ve been very lucky. We’re kind of essential I think. People need heat; people are staying home; and people are doing maintenances and taking care of their homes instead of going on vacations, so they were adding equipment and spaces to make their homes more comfortable while they were hiding from the covid.”

“We did notice there was a large increase of residential (business) because everyone is working from home and water heaters were going, people wanted to update their air conditioning systems while they were home, and they were utilizing the Connecticut Efficiency Fund,” Douglas Sturtevant added. “It helps out people who are struggling and if you do need new heat or air conditioning, depending on your health problems, we can make it work for our customers.”

Douglas Sturtevant has been in the industry since he was 15 and worked for a couple different companies before Jill Sturtevant suggested they start their own business, which they did in 2004.

“I told him I have a business background so I’ll help you manage the office and we’ll get you going in your own company and we’ll hire some technicians,” Jill Sturtevant said. “It was just Doug at first for a while and then eventually we grew; we kept adding more staff and technicians. And then we added Oliver Oron as our partner. I think we have a great team now; we are very personable and we try to take care of our customers to the best of our abilities.”

Oron takes care of all the residential customers and quoting.

Douglas Mechanical Services is open Monday-Friday 8am-5pm, but are always on call. They can be reached at douglasmechanicalservices.com or by calling (860) 357-4952.
