BERLIN – The local fire department has become the latest department in the area to report a scam involving the purported sale of T-shirts under the ruse that it’s being done on behalf of local firefighters.
The Berlin Volunteer Fire Department over the weekend warned the public that the sale of these shirts with the department’s logo on it is a scam. A photo of the shirt shows a firefighter on one knee and reads, “stand for the flag, kneel for the fallen.”
A similar type of shirt has been purported to be sold by other area fire departments that have also warned of the scam, which generally has involved either phishing tactics for personal information or even charged victims monetary funds with the promise of a shirt that never arrives.
The image shared by Berlin Firefighters shows the fraudulent sale purportedly taking place on TrendShirtPrime.com.
“We would like to make the public aware that the sale of this T-shirt is not affiliated with or condoned by the Berlin Volunteer Fire Department,” firefighters said via Facebook.
“This T-shirt is not being sold as a department fundraiser,” firefighters continued.
Other area fire departments that have made the public aware of similar scams include those in Southington and Terryville, as well as Harwinton and Burlington.
This type of scam has also been reported in other parts of the country, including states like Wisconsin, Illinois and Massachusetts.
