BERLIN – The Town is hosting dog obedience classes this fall and coincidently, plans for a new off-leash area at Pistol Creek were just approved.

While no official date has been set for the opening of the 50,000 sq. ft. fenced-in dog park, Berlin Parks and Recreation will be offering two different courses at the golf course-turned wildlife preserve beginning in September.

Kindergarten Puppy Training is set to take place on Thursdays, Sept. 15 through Oct. 27 from 6 to 7 p.m. The class is for puppies, two-and-a-half to six months old. Curriculum will include leash walking and commands like ‘come’, ‘sit’ and ‘down.’ Puppies will develop social skills and confidence, while their owners will learn how to praise and correct them appropriately. Chewing, housebreaking and crate training will also be addressed.

Dog Obedience is for dogs six months and older. This class is set to take place on Tuesdays, Sept. 13 to Oct. 25 from 6 to 7 p.m. Basic commands including sit, down, stay, heel, come and stand will be taught. People will learn how to correct their dog’s bad habits such as jumping up and pulling on the leash. They will also learn how to praise, correct and discipline their dogs appropriately.

For both courses, the first class is mandatory and for people only. They should bring with them a six-foot leash and proof of their dog’s vaccinations.

Registration starts Aug. 15 for residents and Aug. 22 for non-residents. The fee is $100 for residents and $110 for non-residents. Dog handlers 16 and older may register online through the Town’s WebTrac registration system (BerlinCT.gov) or in person at the Berlin Parks and Recreation office, 230 Kensington Rd.

Berlin Town Council recently approved plans for the off-leash area at Pistol Creek, located at 600 Spruce Brook Rd. Once open, this will be the only public location in town where well-behaved dogs may be let off leash, per an ordinance that went into effect last year.
