Sports Roundup: New Britain softball continues to roll with win over East Catholic

MANCHESTER - The New Britain softball team just keeps on winning and keeps on hitting.

The Hurricanes collected 25 hits on their way to a 23-16 extra-inning win over East Catholic on Thursday.

Jamyra Irizarry, Paola Bronner and Gabby Roy led the way for New Britain offensively with Irizarry going 6-for-6 with three triples, two doubles, a home run and eight RBI. Bronner and Roy drove in four runs apiece themselves.

The Eagles held a 9-1 lead after the second inning, but the Hurricanes rallied with 22 runs over the final five innings.

Innovation 19, Parish Hill 16: The Ravens collected their sixth win of the season in a back-and-forth matchup. Leanna Giles earned the win and collect three hits at the plate for Innovation, while teammate Cat Mason hit a bases-clearing triple in the fourth inning.

Portland 14, Goodwin Tech 12: The Gladiators came close to winning, but collapsed in the final inning, allowing nine runs to squander a seven-run lead. Haley Perez hit an RBI double for Goodwin Tech with Valerie Ramierez throwing a complete game.

BASEBALL East Catholic 8, Berlin 4: The Redcoats allowed six runs over the final two innings to fall to the Eagles. Zach Philippon was charged with the loss. Berlin’s Mike Patterson went 2-for-2, including a triple.

South Windsor 7, New Britain 2: It was not a good afternoon for the Hurricanes as they struggled on both offensively and pitching wise. Alex Silva collected the loss.

But the New Britain baseball program will be attending opening day of the New Britain Little League on Saturday.

Goodwin Tech 10, O’Brien Tech 1: The Gladiators keep on rolling thanks to a nine-run sixth inning. Keith Selander tossed a complete game for Goodwin Tech, striking out eight, while Dave Plourde went 2-for-4 with two RBI.

GIRLS GOLF

Berlin 220, Simsbury 233: The Redcoats’ Jackie Cooper medaled in the match by shooting a 48. Rounding out Berlin’s top scorers were Bridget McQuillan (54), Alena Kittleman (5) and, Marisa Maquis (63).

East Catholic 211, New Britain 238: Ava Morell was the top performer for the Hurricanes, shooting a 53. Natalie Brewer and Sierra Prisco (60), Monika Mocarska (65) and Cate Keithline (66) rounded out New Britain’s scores.

BOY GOLF

University 208, Goodwin Tech 203: Hunter Holley (61), Josh Donaghy (65), Farrell Leardi (65) and Xavier Irizarry (67) were the Gladiators top four scorers.

BOYS TENNIS

New Britain 7, Platt 0: It was a clean sweep for New Britain with Lewis Mazario picking up his first doubles win on the Hurricanes varsity squad.

GIRLS TRACK

Plainville 74, Platt 65: The Blue Devils improved to 2-0 thanks to a number of strong performances. Helena Yawin took first in the 3200 and the triple jump, Kayla Ditolla in both the 800- and 1600-meter runs, Amy Muller in the 400 and Amiyah Peters in the 100 hurdles.

BOYS TRACK

Plainville 122, Platt 27: EJ Wyncoop won 100, high jump, long jump and anchored the winning 4x100 team for the Blue Devils, while Colin Marlin won shot put, javelin and discus. Plainville is now 1-1.
