NEW BRITAIN - The Berlin golf teams were once again victorious at the New Britain/Berlin Rotary Stan Pisk Memorial Golf Championship.
The defending champion Redcoats swept both the boys and girls division of the 54th annual championship Tuesday afternoon at Stanley Golf Course.
Berlin’s Mike McCarthy finished out the afternoon as the medalist in the boys division with a 75 over the Blue and Red Nines. Teammate Ricky Nappi was close behind with a 77, while Spencer Duke and John Downes rounded out the Redcoats scores with a 78 apiece.
The New Britain boys finished second followed by Goodwin Tech.
The Berlin girls were almost caught by New Britain, winning by just three stokes. Co-medalists Jackie Cooper and Alena Kittlemen led the Redcoats with a 48.
The long drive winner for the boys was Berlin’s Mike McCarthy while his teammate Spencer Duke won closest to the pin. Alina Kittlemen from Berlin was the girls closest to the pin winner and teammate Jackie Cooper was the long drive winner.
The annual event brings together the three area high schools as a tribute to Stanley “Stan” L. Pisk, the former PGA head professional at Stanley Golf Course, a World War II Combat solider and member and officer of New Britain/Berlin Rotary.
Pisk was inducted last fall into the CT Section PGA Hall of Fame. His achievements as a golf professional, a soldier and a rotarian continue to inspire others both in and outside the world of golf and rotary. The tournament has received local, national, and international recognition. The National Anthem was sung by Ralph Sherman.
The winning teams and their coaches, the other coaches and a scholarship winner from each team will be the guests of Rotary next week for a special awards luncheon in their honor at the New Britain YMCA in Parker Hall.
