Berlin advances, Newington falls in girls soccer state tournament first round play

MANCHESTER - Freshman Ashley Wenzel led the Berlin girls soccer team to its 2-0 victory past East Catholic, and its advancement to the Class M tournament Tuesday afternoon.

Both of Wenzel’s goals were assisted by Maxine Muscatello and Angela Perrelli. The Redcoats goalkeeper, Lindsay Walsh recorded eight saves while the Eagles had 10.

Berlin will continue on in the tournament and will travel to the fourth-seeded Platt Tech on Thursday.

Middletown 4, Newington 0: The No. 22 Indians were shut out 4-0 by 11th-seeded Middletown in the first round of the Class LL tournament Tuesday evening. Middletown will advance and play the sixth-seeded Glastonbury.

The Indians finish their season with an 8-9 record.
