Sports Roundup: Berlin boys basketball suffers rout to East Catholic on road

MANCHESTER - The Berlin boys basketball team was up 9-3 Friday evening against East Catholic when things turned for the worst.

The Eagles went on a 34-0 run that would ultimately hand the Redcoats an 84-44 loss.

Berlin was outscored 28-9 in just the first quarter and was then outscored 22-5 in the second, 22-15 in the third, while outscoring East Catholic 15-12 in the fourth.

Mike McCarthy was the leading scorer of the evening for the Redcoats putting up 11 points including three 3s.

Goodwin Tech 75, Cheney Tech 48: The Gladiators improved their record Friday evening as they rolled past Cheney Tech.

Goodwin Tech was led by Josh Peeples who scored 24 points. Francisco Santiago also added to the score with 16 points of his own.

The Gladiators outscored the Beavers 38-25 in the first half. With a lead of 13, Goodwin continued to score on its opponent. In the final half, the Gladiators outscored Cheney Tech 37-20.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Cheney Tech 46, Goodwin Tech 29: For the second night in a row, the Gladiators had trouble finding the inside of the basket.

Goodwin Tech scored just 12 points in the first half and 17 in the second with just three points coming in the third quarter.

Even Paola Barbosa’s 17 points, a game high, was not enough for the Gladiators, who managed to hit on just 4-of-12 free throw attempts. Not other Goodwin Tech player finished in double figures.

Alexah Porter scored a team-high 13 points for Cheney Tech, while teammate Madison Tufi added 10.

The loss drops the Gladiators to 3-6 on the season.

Innovation 22, Achievement First 10: The Ravens increased their record to 4-6 Friday evening as they defeated Achievement First.

In Innovations last two games they have only giving up four points. The Ravens defensive efforts are what led them to their victory. Kelsey Walicki and Bailee Nardi were the leading scorers of the evening, both scoring eight points.

Walickiwas able to hold off Achievement First’s top player Donnarie Noble. Noble usually scores 12-15 points per game and Walicki limited her to only two Friday evening.
