BERLIN - With former Berlin wrestling greats in attendance for Alumni Night, the Redcoats didn’t let down.
Berlin dominated throughout the night and went on to beat Plainville 54-21 on Wednesday night.
“I thought we wrestled real well as a team,” Berlin’s Josh Veleas said. “I think it helped that the alumni were here. It really had a positive impact. It was a great atmosphere for them.”
The Redcoats’ Mike King and Dan Veleas got the first two wins out of the way early on.
King, wrestling at 134 pounds, beat the Blue Devils’ Nate Cyr on an 8-4 decision.
Veleas was next up at 140 against Plainville’s Esteban Torres. While Torres put up a battle, Veleas was able to pin him at 5:25.
With the 9-0 lead for the Redcoats, the Blue Devils got their first points of the night as Kyle Voisine beat Berlin’s Josh Wood via a 5-4 decision in the 143 pound weight class.
Those three points would be the team’s only points for a while as Berlin won its next four matches.
“I think we’re improving,” Berlin head coach Jim Day said. “I think the effort was there. Some of our technique is getting better. We got a month to go to polish some things up before the states.”
Moses Marino, wrestling at 154 pounds, pinned Alex Hernandez at 3:04 to give the Redcoats a 15-3 lead.
Josh Veleas ended his opponent quick as he pinned Plainville’s Kaleb Korona at 1:29 wrestling in the 162-pound weight class.
Berlin’s Sebby Maspini, wrestling at 172 pounds, beat the Blue Devils Ty Pales via a 4-1 decision. At 184 pounds, Berlin’s Aiden O’Connor pinned Bhaya Patel at 1:11.
The Blue Devils had four wins on the night.
“We scored 21 points today but we also scored 21 points against Platt, which is a much harder team overall,” Plainville’s Sebby Soli said. “Some guys today didn’t wrestle their best, but overall, not too many pins on our side so they fought hard at least.”
The three Plainville wins other than Voisine’s victory were all pins.
“We’ve got our four or five kids that I know are going to do really well,” Blue Devils head coach Rusty Smith said. “The only problem was that two of them were matched up against two of their better kids. The two Veleas brothers matched up with two of our good kids and we couldn’t do anything with that.”
Travis Boone, wrestling at 222 pounds, pinned Berlin’s Mike Rivera at 4:13. Dom Pedrollini pinned the Redcoats Jake Kaplan at 2:45, at 115 pounds.
Soli, meanwhile, finished up the match with a pin of Berlin’s Tyler Barber at 3:35.
Nate Orde also had a pin in the evening for Berlin. Orde, wrestling at 122 pounds, pinned Shai-yonna Durham at 2:54.
For the Redcoats, it was a well-deserved win in front of the alumni in attendance. On the other side, Plainville flashed some potential hanging in there against some tough opponents.
The Blue Devils will travel to Portland for the Highlander Invitational on Saturday.
Berlin will have dual meets Saturday against Southington, Trumbull, Middletown and Glastobury.
