Sports Roundup: New Britain boys basketball defeats Stamford

NEW BRITAIN - The New Britain boys basketball team had a consistent four quarter effort Saturday afternoon.

With double digit point quarters, the Hurricanes topped Stamford 75-61.

The Hurricanes were led by Thameen Dupree who tallied up 23 points and Nyzaiah Diaz who had 16.

The Hurricanes outscored the Black Knights 27-12 to set the tempo of the game. In the second quarter New Britain was able to hold its opponent to just five points as they scored 15.

In its efforts to make a comeback, Stamford outscored New Britain 34-14 in the third quarter but it wouldn’t be enough as the Hurricanes topped the afternoon off, outscoring the Black Knights 17-10.

With the win, New Britain moved to 8-5 on the season.


Enfield 4, Newington-Berlin 0: The Indians were shut out Saturday afternoon. Newington’s Adam Belair recorded 24 saved, while the Indians took 28 shots on net. Unfortunately for Newington, none of the 28 shots found the back of the net.

The Indians are now 6-4 on their season and will play E.O. Smith-Tolland on Wednesday at 6:45 p.m.

New Britain wrestling placed third at the Highlander Tournament.

It was the first time the team placed top 3 in an individual tournament in recent memory.

The Hurricanes had three individual champions as well as a second and third place finisher.

Elijah Watson took first place in the 132-pound bracket, advancing his record on the season to 31-2. Raul Mateo placed third in a packed 138-pound bracket.

In the 170-pound bracket Jovany Rodriguez and Sebatian Sobieski placed first and second, taking home both top spots in the weight class. In the 220-pound bracket, Oran Burnett took first with all three of his wins coming by pin. New Britain will be back in action on Wednesday against Farmington.
