BERLIN - Those involved with the Berlin Athletic Hall of Fame couldn’t be happier.
It took two years of hard work, planning and patience, but the Berlin Athletic Hall of Fame will finally unveil is permanent location at the high school Saturday at 3 p.m. prior to the boys basketball game against Farmington.
Located on second floor, just outside the Media Center and adjacent to the school’s A Gym, the display recognizes the contributions of past athletes, coaches, teams and contributors to Berlin athletics. The event is open to the public.
“I think this is a great thing for the town of Berlin, for the athletes involved, the high school and the public,” said Bart Bovee, the President of the Berlin Athletic Hall of Fame said. “We had to wait for the renovations at the high school to be done with, but when they were done, the spot that we had always wanted was even better. It became much more open and much more accessible. It really exemplifies what the Berlin Athletic Hall of Fame is about.”
The establishment of the permanent Athletic Hall of Fame at the high school had been an ongoing goal for the Board of Directors since the first induction class in 2010.
“We’re excited,” Berlin Hall of Fame board member Jim Capodice said. “There have been a lot of people heavily evolved in this. We’ve been fortunate to have everything set the way it needed to be for the display. We had a lot of good people to work with to make it happen.”
To commemorate the ceremony, the Berlin Athletic Hall of Fame sent out invitations to former board members, inductees, town officials and school officials with Bovee expecting 50-plus people to attend the revel.
“I just hope everyone comes out and enjoys the ceremony and then the boys basketball game afterward,” Bovee said.
The Hall of Fame Class of 2018 will be enshrined at the annual induction dinner to be held on Sunday, April 22, at the Aqua Turf in Plantsville. Tickets and information regarding the dinner can be found on the BHS Athletic Hall of Fame website ( www.bhshalloffame.org ).
