GLASTONBURY - The way the Berlin girls basketball team sees it, it doesn’t need a reminder of how far it’s come this season.
After all, the Redcoats believe they are playing their best at the right time. The proof has been on the court.
Berlin started the season 3-6, and while everyone doubted the young “underdog” team, it not only qualified for the Class M state tournament, but reached the semifinal round of the CCC Tournament before falling to Enfield.
“We showed extremely well in the [CCC] tournament,” Berlin head coach Sheila King said. “We got further than anyone expected us to get, and it’s going to pay dividends going into the state tournament. [Before the conference tournament] no one knew who these girls were, and I think now they know who they are. They deserve a world of credit for that.”
Now, Berlin will spend the rest of the week tuning up for Class M state tournament, in which the 19th-seeded Redcoats will travel to No. 14 Stonington for a first round matchup Monday night.
If anything, Berlin expects to make another strong tournament run this season.
“We’re going to continue to practice. We can’t take any days off,” Redcoats guard/forward Angela Perrelli said. “We’re just going to keep working hard. We’re playing really well now compared to the beginning of the season, so I think it’ll just carry over into states. States is going to be a good opportunity for us to play together.”
