Southington, Berlin boys swim teams perform well at Class LL and M finals

MIDDLETOWN - Both Class LL and Class M rounded out the team-portion of their schedules Wednesday afternoon with their respective state finals meets and Southington and Berlin boys swim teams made sure to conclude their seasons on strong notes.


The Blue Knights scored a total of 253 points in their eighth place finish in Class LL Wednesday afternoon at Wesleyan University after a number of strong swims.

The 200 medley relay team of Tyler Heidgerd, Brendon Egan, Evan Bender and Alexander Kuhr dropped 2.46 seconds, claiming ninth place with a time of 1:41.83.

Heidgerd then competed in his first individual race, the 200 freestyle, and finished with a time of 1:49.32 to place 13th.

Kuhr placed 14th in the 50 freestyle with a time of 22.77, while fellow teammate Brian Egan placed 23rd with a time of 23.45.

Brendon Egan, meanwhile, finished the 100 butterfly in 54.42 while Bender finished the 100 freestyle in 51.53.

Derek Melanson placed 14th in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:59.92 while teammate Quintin Kimmel placed 18th with a time of 5:02.90.

The Blue Knights also had three swimmers compete in the 100 backstroke, Heidgerd, Melanson and Bender.

Heidgerd claimed third place with a time of 53.90, while Melanson finished 20th with a time of 58.21 and Bender 22nd, with a time of 58.96. Brendon Egan placed 19th in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:03.63.

Southington also did well in the relays.

The 200 freestyle relay team of Brian Egan, Brendon Egan, Kimmel and Kuhr dropped 1.20 seconds, claiming seventh with a time of 1:31.95.

The Blue Knights finished the meet strong, dropping 8.09 seconds in the 400 freestyle relay. The Blue Knights relay team of Bender, Brian Egan, Kimmel and Heidgerd placed 10th with a time of 3:22.02.

Diving was held on Tuesday, prior to finals. Southington had four divers place during the meet.

Chase Galayda placed eighth with a score of 409.40 while Emerson Suski (316.60), Kian Siadat (245.60) and Benjamin Ragozzine (158.55) also contributed to the Blue Knights score.


The Redcoats scored a total of 246.5 points in their 10th place finish in Class M Wednesday afternoon at Cornerstone Aquatic Center thanks to a number of notable performances.

The 200 medley relay team of Kurt Bauer, Connor Recck, Andrew Roberti and Kiernan Jennings placed sixth with a time of 1:46.72.

Matthew Dennis placed 24th in the 200 freestyle and finished with a time of 2:03.56.

During the 50 freestyle, Jennings placed 15th with a time of 23.67 while Andrew Leary place 17th with a time of 23.58.

Zachary Nielsen was the sole diver representing Berlin, as he finished in 11th place, with a score of 310.65.

Roberti claimed fifth place in the 100 butterfly with a time of 55.90.

In the 100 freestyle, Recck placed fourth with a time of 48.99, while Leary placed 20th with a time of 52.53.

Berlin’s 200 freestyle relay team of Recck, Leary, Peter Cugno and Jennings placed fifth with a time of 1:33.58.

Bauer finished 21st overall in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:03.75.

The Redcoats had three swimmers enter the 100 breaststroke, Recck, Cugno and Adam Kajzer and place.

Recck placed fourth with a time of 1:00.31, while Cugno placed 21st (1:09.47) and Kajzer 23rd (1:10.04).

The Redcoats 400 free relay team of Leary, Roberti, Bauer and Cugno ended the meet with a 14th place finish, in a time of 3:37.49.
