Sports Roundup: New Britain boys basketball advances to holiday tournament final after routing Hartford Public

NEW BRITAIN - The New Britain boys basketball team wasn’t about to miss the championship round of its own holiday tournament. So the Hurricanes made sure to head there with a bang.

Four players - Maurice Turner, Tahmeen Dupree, Nyzaiah Diaz and Shamah Charles - finished in double figures as New Britain routed Hartford Public 76-46 Thursday night.

Dupree finished with a team-high 14 points, while Charles added 12, Diaz scored 11 and Turner had 10.

By halftime, the Hurricanes held a 39-20 lead, which jumped up to a 21-point advantage by the end of the third quarter.

Elijah Drummond scored a game-high 19 points for the Owls.

New Britain will now faced off against East Lyme in the championship game at 6 p.m. on Saturday after the Vikings beat Naugatuck 68-52. Devin Ostrowski (22 points) and Luke Leonard (14 points, 6 steals) led East Lyme.

Hartford Public and the Greyhounds will play the third-place game at 4:15 p.m. Saturday.

Berlin 68, Plainville 65: Tied 49-49 heading into the final quarter, the Redcoats were able to pull out a win thanks to 19-point fourth.

Gianni Fanelli scored a game-high 18 points to go along with six steals, while Holden Murphy added 15 points for Berlin. Ryan Hyde also contributed 12 points and nine assists.

The Blue Devils had three players finish in double figures: Brady Callahan (16 points), Javan Paradis (14 points) and Alec Couture (11 points).


Berlin 53, St. Joseph 43: The Redcoats continue to roll through the early part of their schedule.

Ashley Wenzel scored a game-high 23 points for Berlin, while Lyzi Litwinko added 11.


Newington 2, Newtown 0: The Ranger brothers continue to hurt opposing teams.

Kilian Ranger and other brother Ethan each netted a goal for the Indians co-op, while Andrew Fogarty saved six shots.
