Sports Roundup: Berlin girls basketball routs Platt, secures state tournament berth

BERLIN - The Berlin girls basketball is heading back to the state tournament.

And once again Ashley Wenzel and Lyzi Litwinko led the way.

Wenzel scored a game-high 32 points and Lyzi Litwinko finished with 10 points and 11 rebounds for a double-double as the Redcoats rolled past Platt 79-44 Friday night to pick up their eighth win of the season.

Angela Perrelli and Carly Grega also finished in double figures with 13 and 12 points respectively.

Berlin jumped out to a 21-8 lead after the first quarter and never looked back. By halftime the Redcoats held a 41-22 lead, which jumped up to 64-32 by the end of the third.

Jayleena Gordils led the Panthers (1-6) with 14 points.

Conard 46, Southington 33: The growing pains continue for the Blue Knights.

Sophomore Livvy Pizzitola scored a team-high 12 points, while Livvy Pizzitola scored 10 for Southington (2-5).

Goodwin Tech 17, Norwich Tech 8: Aiyana Montes finished with 10 points for the Gladiators (4-4) in a low-scoring affair.

Goodwin Tech held Norwich Tech scoreless in the first half.

BOYS BASKETBALL

New Britain 81, Newington 49: Maurice Turner came off the bench to score a game-high 21 points and the Hurricanes rolled past the Indians Friday night.

Turner was one of three New Britain players to finish in double-figures as Thameen Dupree added 14 and Shamah Charles scored 11. The Hurricanes used big second and fourth quarters to break the game open.

Julian Ortiz and Mason Romano led the Indians with 10 points each.

Platt 77, Berlin 72: Gianni Fanelli’s game-high 25 points were not enough to help the Redcoats overcome the Panthers.

Berlin trailed most of the night. The Redcoats were down 23-17 after the first quarter, 35-35 at the half and 56-52 after three.

Holden Murphy added 19 points for Berlin, while Ryan Hyde scored 11.

Adreil Gill and Elijah Wright led Platt with 25 and 21 points respectively.

Southington 52, Conard 40: Jared Kelly (12 points), Jake Napoli (11 points) and Adam Hunter (10 points) led the Blue Knights in a game they controlled from the start of the second quarter on.

Goodwin Tech 71, Norwich Tech 34: It was a game the Gladiators controlled from start to finish.

Xavier Cartagena scored a game-high 26 points and Luis Aguiar finished with 16 to help Goodwin Tech improve to 3-4 on the season.

The Gladiators didn’t allow Norwich Tech to reach double figures in a quarter until the fourth, holding their opponent to 20 over the first three.
