BERLIN - The tennis courts at Berlin High School will soon have a new name.
On Thursday, the courts will be dedicated to Rex Smith, the former longtime Redcoats’ boys tennis coach. The dedication ceremony is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
Smith coached and taught at Berlin for 38 seasons before he passed away in November, 2018 at the age of 71.
Never one for the spotlight, Smith constantly put the focus on his players and their achievements. His own accolades, achievements and records were never important and why he endeared himself to so many who played for him.
The coach’s first state champion was Jon Trevethan, who won the Class M singles title in the spring of 2019. Trevethan later won his second straight state championship in 2019 and dedicated the win to his former head coach.
