NEW BRITAIN - After coming up short in a 55-49 loss to Terryville earlier this season, Innovation girls basketball head coach Michael Jessie knew the key to victory in Monday night’s rematch was an improved defensive effort.

“I told them in the locker room if they kept it under 35 points, they would win the game,” Jessie said.

The Ravens heeded their coach’s advice, holding the Kangaroos to just two points in the first quarter and five in the fourth in a 42-33 win, the team’s second in a row. Innovation’s defense helped turn a tie game heading into the final period into a comfortable win to improve to 5-8 on the season.

“This just showed the improvement in our defense,” Jessie said. “To make a 22-point turnaround shows how hard the kids have been working to get better. I’m very proud of how they played tonight.”

Ariana Rivas shined for the Ravens, scoring a game-high 19 points while grabbing 14 rebounds to log her fourth straight double-double. Senior Breanna Santana also picked up a double-double, finishing with 10 points and 12 rebounds.

Amy Roqi led Terryville with 17 points in the loss, while Zoe Zappone added 13. The rest of the team combined for just three points.

Berlin 61, Maloney 15: In a dominant defensive effort, the Redcoats allowed just five points in the first half to build a 25-point halftime lead and cruise to an easy victory over the Spartans on Monday night.

Lyzi Litwinko led the way for Berlin, outscoring the entre Maloney team by netting 16 points and adding seven assists to help the Redcoats to their third straight win. Wynter Yovan pitched in two points but made her mark on the boards, grabbing 12 rebounds.

Ashley Wenzel added 13 points for the Redcoats. The Spartans were led by Gracey Massicotte’s six points.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Innovation 66, Bulkeley 55: LJ Hazelwood missed last game with an ankle injury, but he didn’t miss a beat in his return on Monday night, scoring a team-high 15 points while narrowly missing a triple-double, logging 16 rebounds and eight assists in a road win for the Ravens.

Innovation exploded for 26 points in the fourth quarter to pull away from Bulkeley, which was led by Qualis Williams’ game-high 21 points. Gabe Matias and Clinton Allen added 10 points and six rebounds each for the Ravens, who picked up their 10th win of the season.

Berlin 86, Platt 73: It was a shootout in Berlin on Monday night, and the Redcoats had enough offensive firepower to take down the Panthers and snap a five-game losing streak.

Cam Murphy led the scoring surge with a game-high 29 points for Berlin, which exploded for 32 points in the second quarter alone. Jeff Madeia picked up a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds, while Justin Piskorski added 10 points and eight assists in the winning effort.

Tre Carter led Platt with 25 points.
