NEW BRITAIN - Clinton Allen continues to impress with All-State forward LJ Hazelwood out of the lineup.

“CJ had a hell of a game,” Innovation boys basketball head coach Matt Lance said.

Indeed he did.

Allen finished with a team-high 25 points and an eye-popping 26 rebounds as the Ravens rolled past Civic Leadership 84-50 on Wednesday. Allen also had six steals and four assists.

Michael Blackman and Dashawn Hill each added 10 points for Innovation (16-2) with Blackman also dishing out seven assists.

“Offensively, we established CJ down low, which was great,” Lance said. “We played great offensively. We have to get so much better on the defensive side of the ball. That’s what we take our pride in.”

After a close first quarter that saw the Ravens leading by just three, they took control of the game in the second. Innovation went on a 25-8 run over the final eight minutes of the first half to head into the locker room with a 42-22 lead at the break and extended it to 65-34 after three.

Bryson LaSalle led all scorers with 31 points for Civic Leadership.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Innovation 45, Civic Leadership 26: Te’ijah Roberts finished with a game-high 18 points and Breanna Santana had nine points, 15 rebounds and six steal to lead the Ravens to their seventh win of the season.

“One win away and then the Battle of Slater Road,” Innovation head coach Michael Jessie said, referencing his team’s goal of hitting the eight-win mark as well as the rivalry matchup against Goodwin Tech, which happens to be across the street.

Like their counterpart boys team, the Ravens took control of the game in the second quarter, holding Civic Leadership to just a single point. Innovation then allowed just 11 total points in the second half.

“The thing I was happy with was our defense,” Jessie said. “It was big having other kids step up when one of their leaders [Ariana Rivas] was out.”

BOYS HOCKEY

Newington-Berlin 3, E.O. Smith 2: Chris Brandon scored the deciding goal with 2:27 left on the clock and the Newington co-op was able to kill a two-man penalty to pick up its 13th win of the season.

Braeden Humphrey scored twice in the first period for Newington, but E.O. Smith’s Cam Sterling scored in the second to tie the game at 2-2.
