NEWINGTON - The Newington girls basketball team made sure their senior’s final home game of the regular season was a memorable one.

The Indians jumped out to an early 12-0 lead and never looked back on their way to an easy 48-29 win over New Britain on Senior Night on Thursday.

Ashanti Frazier and Sabrina Soler led the way for Newington. Frazier finished with 11 points and seven rebounds, while Soler had 10 points, nine rebounds and five steals.

Maya Slisz led the Hurricanes with 7 pts.

Berlin 45, East Catholic 39: Chalk up another win for the Redcoats.

“It was another great game,” Berlin head coach Sheila King said. “Tremendous effort from all the kids tonight. We were able to play some good defense against a great East Catholic team.”

That defense came into play as the fourth quarter started.

After the Redcoats (16-2) took a 24-14 lead at the end of the first half, the Eagles responded with a 21-point third quarter. Berlin, meanwhile, managed just seven points during that same stretch to fall behind 35-31. But over the final eight minutes, the Redcoats scored 14 points and held East Catholic to just four.

Lyzi Litwinko contributed eight of those 14 points for Berlin, all at the free throw line. The Redcoats’ all-time leading scorer finished with a game-high 16 points, the only player on the team to reach double figures.

“We had a good first half and then they came out gangbusters it the third quarter,” King said, “and we expected that and in the fourth quarter we really bared down and we got exceptional defensive play.”

Goodwin Tech 40, Innovation 25: The Gladiators got a balanced scoring attack to win the battle of Slater Road against the Ravens.

Ericka Aponte scored 18 points to lead Goodwin Tech (11-8), while Megan Lukeszewski assed seven and Aiyana Montes contributed six points.

Breanna Santana led Innovation (7-13) with nine as the Ravens only had three scorers record a basket.

After a close first half that saw Innovation take an 18-16 lead at the break, the Gladiators took control of the game in the second half thanks to a 16-3 third quarter.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Newington 51, New Britain 49: It was another tough night for the Hurricanes and a rather positive one for the Indians.

Xander Ford finished with a game-high 20 points, including four three pointers to lead Newington (6-11) to a season-series split with New Britain and hand the Hurricanes their third straight loss. Patrick Brennan added 13 points and Donovan Price added 11.

New Britain (10-6) won the first meeting of the season 71-56.

Nyzaiah Diaz and Tyrone Cummings each led the Hurricanes with 10 points, the only players to finish in double figures.

The game was a close one that ultimately came down to the final few seconds.

New Britain grabbed a 15-7 lead after the first quarter and took a 28-18 lead into the break, but the Indians outscored the Hurricanes 33-21 over the final 16 minutes of play, including 16-11 in the fourth quarter.
