MERIDEN - The Berlin boys basketball team knows its state tournament hopes are on the line in the final two weeks of the regular season.
The good news for the Redcoats, they’re still in the running to make the Division III tournament.
“We lived to fight another day,” Berlin head coach Mike Veneziano said. “We still got a pulse no matter how small.’
Danny Lynch scored a game-high 18 points, including five 3-pointers, and Jeff Madeia finished with a double-double (14 points and 11 rebounds) to go along with five assists as the Redcoats beat Platt 54-44 on Friday.
Overall, Berlin (5-12) made eight shots from behind the arc and controlled the game for the first three quarters. The Redcoats led 17-10 after one, 31-18 at the half and 50-25 after three thanks to a 19-point third quarter.
The Panthers (1-16) attempted to make a comeback in the fourth, outscoring Berlin 19-4, but by then, it was too little too late.
Tre Carter led Platt with 17 points.
Southington 96, Middletown 90: With the postseason less than a month away, it appears Southington is peaking at the perfect time.
Behind another strong all-around effort, the Blue Knights earned their seventh straight win after they beat Middletown on Friday.
Derek Melanson was the lone double winner for Southington (7-1). The senior took first in the 200 IM thanks to a time of 2:05.94 and the 100 backstroke after a time of 55.72.
Other individual winners were Landon Colby, who took first in the 100 butterfly (57.79); Tyler Heidgerd, who won the 100 freestyle (50.70); Jackson Malesheske, who came away with the top spot in the 500 freestyle (5:13.25) and Jon Cocchiola, who took first in the 100 breaststroke (1:05.75).
EJ Suski also took first in the diving portion of the meet with a score of 257.95, while the 200 medley relay team of Heidgerd, Cocchiola, Colby and Melanson took first in a time of 1:46.44.
