The rosters for the upcoming CHSCA girls basketball Senior All-Star Games were sent out to coaches on Monday, and a number of area standouts will be playing with some of the best in the state after finishing memorable careers with their respective teams.
The Class L/LL East team is loaded with area talent from four different schools. Newington’s Ashanti Frazier is one of the selections after eclipsing 1,000 career points and putting together another all-conference season. Frazier’s season is still going with the Indians, who are preparing to host Pomperaug in the Class L quarterfinals on Thursday night. Frazier is leading Newington with 15.7 points per game this year, and also leads with 3.9 assists per game.
New Britain’s Tianna Sweeney will also be on the L/LL East team. The Hurricanes forward helped lead the team to their first state tournament appearance in three years thanks to an 11-9 regular season record, more wins than the past two years combined.
Also on the team is Bristol Eastern’s Jordan Ouellette, who just recently passed 1,000 career points for the Lancers. Ouellette was once again an all-conference selection this year and led Eastern to the second round of the Class LL state tournament.
Rounding out the locals on L/LL East is St. Paul guard Janessa Gonzalez, yet another 1,000-point scorer and a selection on the NVL’s all-league team. Gonzalez’s senior season isn’t done just yet, as the Falcons host Wethersfield in the Class L quarterfinals on Thursday night, and if St. Paul and Newington both win, Gonzalez and Frazier will go at it for a chance at a state final appearance before teaming up for the All-Star Game.
Newington head coach Marc Tancredi and New Britain head coach Marc Wesoly will be teaming up to coach the L/LL East squad.
On the Class S/M/MM West team is Berlin guard Lyzi Litwinko, the program’s all-time leading scorer. Litwinko earned another all-conference nod this year and helped the Redcoats to the second round of the Class MM state tournament, where they were the No. 1 overall seed.
Both All-Star Games will take place on Monday, March 23 at Mercy High School in Middletown. The Class S/M/MM game will be at 6 p.m., with the L/LL game following immediately after, scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
