BRISTOL - The Southington girls soccer team defeated Bristol Eastern by a five-goal margin for the second time this season and extended its undefeated streak to nine games.

The Blue Knights launched 30 shots on Lancers’ goalkeeper Grace D’Amato in Tuesday’s contest and found the back of the net six times from five different players in the 6-1 win.

Nina Muir scored twice while Jessica Carr, Shannon Litchfield, Riley Prozzo and Abby Sowa each scored once.

Southington’s smothering defense held Eastern to just three shots in the match, but Breanna Venturo-Nelson was able to score on one of those chances to avoid the shutout.

The Blue Knights will host Plainville, a team they already beat 5-0, on Thursday in pursuit of their 10th win while the Lancers will host Bristol Central in their second meeting of the season.

Bristol Central 4, Plainville 2: The Rams led 1-0 after halftime courtesy of a goal from Rachel Wygant, assisted by Christine Attle.

A defensive miscue allowed the Blue Devils to tie the match 1-1, before Bella Bosco, Abby Hansen and Rebecca Litwinczyk scored three consecutive goals to put Central in the lead. The win ended a three-game losing streak for the Rams who will face Bristol Eastern for the second time this season Friday.

Plainville will face Southington on the road Thursday.

Berlin 4, Rocky Hill 0: The redcoats picked up their fifth win of the season and second win over Rocky Hill this season Tuesday. The victory improves Berlin to the ninth-ranked team in Class L.

Clare McGeever, Julia Salina, Carly Grega and Jenna Wenzel were the goal scorers in the match while Katrina Chorzepa posted her fifth clean sheet of the season. The Redcoats will travel to Maloney on Thursday for their next match.

Bristol Eastern 0, Southington 0: The game was extremely tight for all 80 minutes as both teams’ star goalkeepers took center stage.

The Lancers had the best chance of the first half when a corner kick spilled to an open man in the box, but his shot was calmly dealt with by Blue Knights goalkeeper Ryan Lunn.

The second half featured a lot more action. The first good chance came from a defensive error by Southington which turned into an opportunity for a good cross by Eastern. The cross met the head of an Eastern attacker, but was denied once again by Lunn.

"We dug in the last third and played tough defense," Eastern coach Bill Sweet said. "However, our offense was plagued by a good Southington defense and our lack of poise with the ball today."

The best chances of the match fell Southington’s way in the last quarter of an hour. The Blue Knights were able to break through Eastern’s press multiple times and get shots away from strikers Cole Marek and Liam Schroeder. With just under 11 minutes left, one of these shots struck the hand of an Eastern defender, resulting in a Blue Knight penalty kick. Unfortunately for the home crowd, senior midfielder, Mitch Messina, could not convert from the spot as his chance was saved by Nate DiLoreto diving to his left.

Chances continued to come with DiLoreto again standing strong denying Schroeder in one-on-one opportunity, and saving another shot from Marek.

Both teams retake the pitch Friday when the Lancers face Bristol Central and the Blue Knights travel to Plainville.

Newington 1, Maloney 1: After defeating Maloney 4-0 at home early in the season, Newington was not able to have as much success in Meriden and left with its second draw of the season.

The Spartans struck first in the second half on a penalty kick from Sanford Bruce in the 58th minute, but Newington struck back in the 69th minute with a goal from Reed Campbell that was assisted by Beckham Alderucci.

Newington returns home Thursday to face Rocky Hill.
