The Connecticut High School Coaches Association released its boys and girls soccer All-State teams for the 2020 season, and it wasn’t short on local representatives.

A total of five area players made the elite squad on the boys side, with a couple earning the honor for the second time in their memorable high school careers.

Bristol Eastern goalkeeper Nate DiLoreto was honored for the second straight season, and for good reason. The senior posted three shutouts this year and became the second goalie in program history to score a goal, all adding up in a CCC Region B All-Star selection. DiLoreto is committed to play at Hartford University next year.

Across town at Bristol Central, Mark Palma was also named All-State after the senior recorded 10 assists and four goals in the shortened season.

Plainville’s Pat Gryczewski earned an All-State selection for the second straight season after pouring in 14 goals and 10 assists on the year, and will graduate as one of the top soccer players the program has ever seen.

Newington is represented by Christian Amaral, who followed up his all-conference 2019 season with an even better showing in 2020, scoring 10 goals while dishing out 11 assists. He will look to become a two-time All-State selection next year as a senior.

Rounding out the local All-State talents is Goodwin Tech’s Christian Guzman, who was named to the Class M All-State team. Guzman and the Gladiators were moved into the CRAL this season due to travel restrictions, but that didn’t stop Guzman from being among the best in Connecticut against new competition.

The girls team also wasn’t short on local representation, led by Southington’s three selections following its unbeaten season. Goalkeeper Emily Eigo followed up a junior year where she helped the Blue Knights to a state championship berth by being named to this year’s Class LL All-State team, as did Abby Sowa, a repeat selection who was named to the All-New England team last year and is committed to play at East Carolina University next season.

Jessica Carr earns All-State for Southington in a dominant sophomore season that saw her score 11 goals and earn an All-New England nomination. Carr likely has more All-State awards coming her way, and is already drawing interest from UConn.

Newington’s Olivia Mullings was also on last year’s All-New England team, and will graduate from Newington having been selected to the Class LL All-State team multiple times in her decorated career. Like Sowa, Mullings will be playing at the Division I level next year, having committed to Hartford.

In Class L, Jenna Zup of Berlin gets an All-State selection after a senior season that saw her log seven goals and seven assists, and retires as one of the best midfielders in Connecticut this season.

Two area athletes were named All-State in Class S, with St. Paul’s Sophia Gert and Innovation’s Ariana Rivas being honored.
