Sports roundup: Newington girls basketball one win away from undefeated season

BRISTOL - The St. Paul girls basketball team secured its eighth consecutive NVL Iron Division title Tuesday night with a 41-34 win over Wolcott. The Falcons have won 10 of the last 12 division titles and improve their record to 8-3 this season.

Sophia Gerst and Nadia Riemer took on the majority of St. Paul’s scoring, notching 14 and 15 points, respectively. Both players made a three-point in the contest.

The Falcons will complete their season Wednesday on the road against Holy Cross.

Newington 63, Bulkeley/SMSA 14: Newington is now just one game away from completing an undefeated regular season with a 49-point win Tuesday.

All 15 players on the Newington roster scored in this blowout led by 10 points from Ella DePase and nine points from Karissa Zocco. Madison Romanello finished with eight points, seven rebounds and three assists while Lilly Ferguson posted four points, six rebounds and four steals.

Newington will finish its regular season Friday on the road against Rocky Hill.

Lewis Mills 64, Bristol Eastern 38: The Lancers struggled in their first game since Feb. 26, following a two-week break due to the CIAC covid protocols, losing to Lewis Mills by 26 points.

Lewis Mills led at every turn, leading 19-8 after the first period, and 33-13 at the half. Brice Waldron scored 17 points, Tommy Martinotti posted 13 and Drew Cormier finished with 10 to pace the Spartan attack. Lewis Mills connected on nine three's in the contest out of their 25 field goals.

For Eastern, no one scored in double figures. Trini Otero scored nine, while Elijah Parent and Axel Fernandez each scored seven.

Eastern hosts New Britain on Thursday, plays at Bristol Central on Friday, and hosts Avon on Saturday, making up as many games as it can, as the final week of the regular season comes to an end.

Berlin 56, Platt 50: The Redcoats ensured they won’t finish the season below .500 Tuesday with their second win of the season over Platt.

Berlin pulled away in the first and fourth quarters led by an 18-point performance by Michael Ciarcia, who scored 13 of his points in the opening and closing periods. Joe Caracoglia added 10 points and Sal Dastoli grabbed 12 rebounds. Berlin made seven three-pointers in the contest.

The Redcoats will close out their season Friday on the road against Maloney.
