BERLIN - The Berlin girls basketball team made sure to cap off its regular season with a win.
And it has another team effort to thank for it.
Carly Grega scored a team-high 14 points, Rylee Cop added 11 points of her own and Wynter Yovan pulled down eight rebounds as the Redcoats beat Maloney 48-21 on Friday.
Grega also finished with four assists and seven rebounds.
“We got real good performances by our two seniors tonight,” Berlin head coach Sheila King said of Grega and Yovan. “We also got solid performances from Rylee and Clare McGeever and some very good play from freshmen Emma Ellison and Janessa Yaconiello.”
The Redcoats dominated the game from the beginning. They held a 26-4 lead at the half after shutting out the Spartans in the second quarter and outscored Maloney 22-17 over the final 16 minutes.
“Now, we’re looking forward to the CCC Tournament,” King said.
Newington 53, Rocky Hill 26: Newington completed its undefeated season Friday night with a 27-point win over Rocky Hill.
Lilly Ferguson led all scorers with 13 points to go along with seven rebounds, three assist and five steals. Karissa Zocco added 12 points and five assists in the win in which Newington dominated from start to finish. Newington lead by 17 points at half and only grew its lead over the next two quarters.
Newington will be one of the top-seeded teams in the CCC tournament which will start Monday.
Terryville 40, Wamogo 25: The Kangaroos picked up a win in the consolation round of the Berkshire League tournament over winless Wamogo.
Zoe Zappone notched 13 points to lead Terryville while Alivia Cote posted 11 and made the team's only three of the game. Wamogo's Juliane Weik was the game's high scorer with 16 points.
Dylan Matulis scored 21 points before fouling out as Terryville survived a Wamogo comeback to win 51-48 in the quarterfinals of the Berkshire League Tournament. The Kangaroos advance to the semi-finals to face second-seeded Nonnewaug on Tuesday. Matt Thompson led the Warriors with 18 points.
Terryville led by 13 going into the fourth quarter, but the Kangaroos lost two key players, Matulis and Dominick Dao, to fouls and Wamogo capitalized. The Warriors hit four three-pointers in the quarter to spark their rally. Dao added 11 points and 10 rebounds and Sean O'Donnell chipped in with 10.
Maloney 50, Berlin 41: In the beginning, it looked like the game would end up a rout in favor of the Spartans.
The Redcoats turned the ball over 13 times in the first half and found themselves down 24-6 early in the second quarter, but made a game of it late. Berlin cut its deficit down to four with a few minutes left before Maloney ultimately held on.
Justin Piskorski led the Redcoats with 11 points, while freshman River Eberhardt was a bright spot off the bench with seven points.
