Roundup: St. Paul baseball blasts Torrington; Newington softball takes care of Farmington

ST. PAUL – St. Paul baseball’s offense could not be stopped in its huge 28-9 win over Torrington on Thursday. A 15-run inning propelled St. Paul past the hosts as it handed Torrington its first loss of the season.

Ryan Daniels seemingly hit everything in sight for the Falcons as he finished 3-for-5 with two, three-run homers and seven RBIs.

Steve Morelli and Jamie Leggett also hit well for St. Paul as Morelli went 4-for-4 with a double and four RBIs while Leggett went 3-for-4 with a double and six RBIs. The Falcons sprayed 18 hits, but committed two errors.

The Falcons’ starter Owen Davis got the win, despite allowing eight runs on five hits in 2 and 2/3 innings of work. Ty Davis came in and got the save throwing 2 and 1.3 innings while surrendering one run and three hits. The Davis brothers both picked up three strikeouts.

Torrington got homeruns from Cooper Suminski (grand slam) and Nick Basso.

St. Paul will host Watertown on Friday at 3:45 p.m.

AVON 9, BRISTOL CENTRAL 7: Seven errors cost the Bristol Central in its loss against Avon.

The Rams finished with more hits (10-7), but committed five more errors than the visitors in their second straight loss.

Matt Beaucar took the loss for Bristol Central while Benjamin Angus was the winning pitcher for Avon.

The Rams received two hits each from Roberto Cruz and Frank Spirito, with Cruz also compiling a pair of RBIs. Bristol Central scored all of its runs in two innings, three in the third and four in the sixth.

Zach Aiello and Daniel Bae of Avon had the only extra-base hits of the game, both doubles.

The Rams will next travel to Lewis Mills on Saturday at 1 p.m.


NEWINGTON 16, FARMINGTON 8: Jaelyn Gonzalez did it all for the Nor’easters in its victory over Farmington. Gonzalez grabbed four hits, including two doubles and a triple, and also took the win on the mound for Newington.

Amanda Akerley (homerun), Elisa Taylor (homerun) and Ella Stair (triple) concluded with the other extra-base hits for the Nor’easters. Taylor added four RBIs to lead the team whole Macy Guion got on base three times with two hits and a walk.

The win snapped Newington’s two-game losing streak.

The Nor’easters will welcome East Hartford on Friday at 4 p.m.


BERLIN 4, ROCKY HILL 3: The Redcoats swept the doubles matches to win this rain-delayed match that began on Monday.

The teams of Victoria Pietrucha and Maddie Palmese, Susan Wisniewski and Emily Wisniewski and Abby Cutler and Emily Kulinski all won for Berlin.

Christine Kole won her singles match for the Redcoats, beating Jasmine Ly 7-6 and 6-1.

Berlin will visit Middletown on Friday at 3:45 p.m.


WILCOX TECH 205, GOODIN TECH 253: The Gladiators dropped their first match of the season in the defeat.

Isaiah Martel led the way for Goodwin, shooting a 51, Christian Molina followed with a 54, while Jaylese Harris and Janelle Roberts each shot 74.

Cole Maluszewski was the medalist for the match, finishing with a 45 for Wilcox.

The Gladiators will visit Kaynor Tech on Monday Apr. 26 at 2 p.m.
