BRISTOL – Berlin and Bristol Eastern each hit one home run in their softball game Wednesday, and that was one of the only similarities between the teams on this day.

The Redcoats extended its winning streak to eight games with a 16-1 win over the Lancers in five innings. Eight Berlin players secured at least one hit in the game and each of those eight scored at least once as well. Sophomore designated player Hailey Wieczorek notched four RBI with a two-run home run in the second inning and a two-RBI single in the fourth.

“I can’t say I came onto this field expecting that we would be walking off with the result we did,” Berlin head coach Jason Pires said. “I expected this to be a very tight game, a very close game where one big hit on either side was going to win it. The fact that my kids were able to do what they were able to do, I’m incredibly proud of them.”

Senior third baseman Jasmine Perez’s solo home run in the third inning produced the Lancers’ only run of the day and was of the three hits as junior pitcher Stefanie Poulin was locked in for the Redcoats. Poulin only finished with four strike outs, but did not give Eastern much to work with in five innings of at bats.

“Some days are just not your day,” Lancers’ coach Scott Redman said. “You fall behind early like that it’s hard to get locked in. We left the ball over the plate a little bit and against Berlin when you do that they crush it.”

The Redcoats opener their scoring with a pair of two-out runs in the first inning. Poulin reached on a single and junior catcher Sophia Fazzina drove Poulin in with a double on the next at bat. Senior third baseman Kylie Lanteri brought home Poulin with a single for her first of two RBI.

“We come on the field and we’re ready to win,” Lanteri said. “This game came down to we really wanted to win and we wanted it more than them and it showed.”

Berlin plated seven in the top of the second, starting with a double from freshman left fielder Jess Petit who was then driven in by sophomore first baseman Kailee Demaio. Senior shortstop Jenna Zup and senior center fielder Casey Uryga hit consecutive singles and then came home on a double from Poulin.

Lanteri drove in Poulin and then Wieczorek capped the inning with a home run to left-center field to give the Redcoats a 9-0 lead.

“I’ve been struggling hitting and I just got in the box and had to change my mindset, get confident in there and make contact with the ball” Wieczorek said.

Berlin batted around for the second inning in a row in the third and added five more runs, highlighted by a two-RBI single from Wieczorek. The team added two more in the fourth inning and were able to pick up the win by mercy rule in five innings.

“I think it showed we’re a really serious team and we want to win and we will just keep pushing to win every game we can,” Wieczorek said.

Up next for Eastern is a road contest with Platt on Thursday while Berlin will travel to Middletown, a team the Redcoats already beat 14-1, on Friday.
