Berlin and Southington football stay undefeated through Week 3

The Berlin Redcoats went on the road to defeat the Fitch Falcons 29-23 to stay perfect through three weeks of 2022. 

Most of the damage was done on the ground for Berlin as quarterback Lorenzo Miele only completed six passes for 57 yards and two interceptions. Senior running back Josh Clement paced the Redcoats on the ground with 142 yards on 17 rushes with three touchdowns.

Junior running back Elijah Santos contributed 70 total yards of offense on just four touches. Kyle Melville was the only other manufacturer of a touchdown besides Clement with 43 rushing yards on 10 carries.

The Southington Blue Knights also remained unbeaten and took down the team’s top team in the process. 

The Greenwich Cardinals took a commanding 21-point lead in the opening frame before Southington began to piece things together to escape victorious, 29-28.

Quarterback CJ DiBenedetto threw for 300 yards, a touchdown and an interception in the win. Junior wideout Evan Anderson also made an impact on both ends of the Blue Knights’ passing attack with a 24-yard touchdown pass to his credit. He was able to pair that with 201 receiving yards and a touchdown catch.

Senior back Lincoln Cardillo continued his impressive campaign rushing for 86 yards and two scores in the win.

The New Britain Golden Hurricanes are looking to recapture the success from Week 1 after losing the last two contests at home. The Hurricanes fell to the Danbury Hatters 28-14 on Friday night from Veterans Stadium.

Quarterback Donavan Campbell threw for 97 yards, 51 of which were completed to Dameer Bailey. Bailey had a touchdown to his credit along with Cayden Hill who led the team in rushing with 28 yards.

The Newington Nor’easters dropped their third straight game to start the season at the hands of the Staples Wreckers 37-14.

Newington allowed 461 total yards of offense to the Wreckers despite tallying three interceptions against Staples junior quarterback Caleb Smith. He finished the day 16-for-22 passing with 298 yards and two touchdowns.

The Plainville Blue Devils continued their gauntlet of a schedule against the New Fairfield Rebels on Friday and suffered their second-straight big loss, third loss overall. The Rebels took care of the Blue Devils by a 43-0 final.

Rebels quarterback Justin McCormack threw for four touchdowns, connecting with four different wide receivers as he only missed on one throw the entire game. Plainville allowed McCormack to complete 11-of-12 attempts for 229 yards.
