BRISTOL - The Bristol Blues made a late push but the comeback fell short as the Worcester Bravehearts were victorious by a score of 2-1 in the first games of Monday’s Independence Day doubleheader.

Trailing 2-0 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning, the Blues got a one-out single from Austin Chauvin, who advanced to second on a subsequent 4-3 ground-out by Zach Scott.

Chauvin took third on a wild pitch on Jimmy Titus’ at-bat and Titus proceeded to drive him in on a single. Brandon Grover followed Titus with a single and that was the end of the day for Bravehearts starter Eric Close.

With Peter Bovenzi on the mound for Worcester and James Brown running for Titus at second, Chris Villa drew a walk to load the bases. But Bovenzi got the last word, striking out Logan Greene to end the game.

The first run of the game came in the top of the fifth inning. Kevin Miller, hitting in the ninth spot for Worcester, led off with a single and, after the next two Bravehearts batters popped out to second and center field, respectively, he stole second and took third on a wild pitch. John Friday then came up to bat and grounded straight to Jimmy Titus. With Friday hustling to first, Titus mishandled the ball, allowing Friday to reach base safely and Miller to scurry home.

The Bravehearts added what ended up being the winning run in the top of the seventh, again scored by Miller. After once again leading off with a single and taking a base on a wild pitch, Miller was driven in by a double from Tom Walraven double.

The game was scoreless through the first four innings and that was primarily due to the strong pitching on both sides. Jared Gallagher went six innings for Bristol, giving up six hits and just the one unearned run. Close nearly executed a complete game but could not get the final out. He gave up five hits and the single Bristol run.
