The Northeast Conference won’t have any football this season until at least October, when the Council of Presidents will reconvene by Oct. 1 to evaluate the risks of competitive fall sports, but student-athletes are still being honored, including a Central Connecticut State University product.
CCSU offensive lineman J’Von Brown was named to the Stats Perform FCS Preseason All-America Third Team on Wednesday, adding to his preseason accolades that also included a preseason All-Northeast Conference Team nod back in the summer.
Brown was one of just three student-athletes from the NEC to earn the All-American recognition.
Brown was named to the Athlon Preseason FCS All-America team last year, as well as the preseason All-NEC team, but his 2019 campaign was shortened due to injury. He played in four games while the Blue Devils won a school-record 11 games, finished the season ranked 23rd in the final Stats Perform FCS Top 25 rankings, won a school-record eight straight games to close the season and secured their second-ever trip to the FCS playoffs.
As a junior in 2018, Brown was named to the All-America Second Team after anchoring a CCSU offensive line that helped the team record 289.3 rushing yards per game in conference play, and its mark of 223.6 rushing yards per game overall was the 21st best in the nation. With Brown on the line, the Blue Devils allowed just 0.73 sacks per game, good for seventh best in the country. The offensive line also allowed only 32 tackles for a loss in 2018 with a healthy Brown, tops in the nation.
Brown’s resume with CCSU also includes all-conference, All-ECAC and All-New England honors, and he was a member of the 2017 NEC championship team. That 2017 squad, with the help of Brown, cleared the way for the Blue Devils’ first 1,000-yard rusher since 2014, and the offensive line tied for ninth nationally with just nine sacks allowed in 11 regular season games.
A Norwich native, Brown went to Norwich Free Academy, where he was a two-time All-State selection and an All-American.
