NEW BRITAIN – The CCSU women’s basketball team clearly didn’t want to get caught in another close game with Fairleigh Dickinson.

After dropping a heartbreaking one-point loss to the Knights on Saturday afternoon, the revenge-minded Blue Devils came out with a dominant 77-56 victory to pick up their second conference win of the season, a feat the team didn’t accomplish until the final week of its schedule last season.

Forever Toppin led the way with 16 points, while Dejah Jenkins and Ashley Berube each chipped in a dozen. Clare Sutherland-Case rounded out CCSU’s double-digit scorers, finishing with 11 points.

Trailing by three early in the second quarter, the Blue Devils came to life with a sudden offensive eruption that eventually led to a dominant lead at the half. The run began with a game-tying 3-pointer from Emma McCamus, which sparked a 15-0 run highlighted by a triple from Toppin, who also assisted on McCamus’ 3-pointer. Jenkins’ efficient free throw shooting helped keep the lead at double digits through the rest of the half, and CCSU’s lead, which stood at 18 at the break, was never threatened the rest of the way.

The Blue Devils continued to pour it on in the fourth, when a Jamey Napolean layup and a Belle Lanpher free throw extended the lead to 21 with less than six minutes to go to help finish off one of the team’s most impressive conference performances in recent years.

CCSU lost both games to Fairleigh Dickinson last season, including an eight-point defeat at home.
