Late last month, Steve Scalise, the Republican House minority whip, came back to the people’s house using double canes to help him walk through the doors and to allow him to hobble to the speaker’s rostrum.

Rep. Scalise was gunned down by a deranged citizen. The early morning gathering was a practice session for the annual Congressional baseball game. The event had been played for years without incident. On June 14 at 7 in the morning, James Hodgkinson tried to take out as many GOP congressmen as he could. He wounded four people and was killed by Capitol police, Scalisi’s security detail.

The congressman was critically wounded and near death for days, but here he was, 15 weeks after the incident, speaking to his colleagues.

The first words out of his mouth were his thanks to God for the miracle he was given: He had survived and none of the assailant’s targets had suffered serious injury. The responses from the members of the House were standing ovations. It was a celebration of God’s grace - really a celebration.

He thanked his doctors, his wife and, on the top of his list, were two members of his security force, David Baily and Crystal Griner. Both were injured fighting off the attack.

Rep. Scalise brought to the Congress for a few moments American unity, God’s grace and joy.

Go to youtube.com and watch his speech and reception - it is a moment of genuine joy and bipartisan politics. God bless Congressman Steve Scalise and may he help bring peace and harmony to our America.

A point to ponder.
