Do you remember the story of Lot and the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah? God informs Lot to take his family and leave the city; the Lord is going to destroy the cities because it is totally evil, beyond hope or redemption. Lot pleads for mercy for the city to the Lord …The Lord says if Lot found 12 righteous men the city would be spared.
Lot could not find 12 good God-fearing men, so God says find six. Again, Lot fails, but he still asks God to spare the city. The Lord God says, “if you can find one righteous man I will spare the people of Sodom and Gomorrah.” Lot and his family left the city; he could not find one good man. The city and its people were destroyed by a great ball of destructive fire sent by the Lord.
The revelations in the past week about Judge Roy Moore, candidate to represent Alabama in the U.S. Senate, have made me think, not one righteous man could exist in the city on the Potomac, the nation’s capital. That’s the feeling I and many Americans have after the story of what Judge Moore supposedly did 40 years ago. The scandals in the past and the whispers which have come out of the capitol for years, always present a place of passion, power and punishment - and ruin for the noncompliant. Play the game or suffer the consequences.
Good men stay away from the country’s business because they know the price they and their families would have to pay. The power of the governing class is addictive, and a real true moral center must be in place - honor, a sense of justice, decency, propriety and honesty all must be in place for the temptation to be held at bay. Few have it, and the pride that comes with power becomes all-consuming. Remember, the first and most heinous of the seven deadly sins is pride.
Judge Moore’s reputation is in the hands of the voters of Alabama, and who or what do they believe -CBS News or their own instincts. We’ll see in December.
A point to ponder.
