Dear Granddaddy, why do my parents keep pressuring me to go to prom? Prom really isn’t my scene. James F. – high school student

James, as a schoolteacher and a parent, I have some experience with kids who wonder if they should go to their prom. Personally speaking, I really enjoyed my prom when I was your age and have no regrets about going, however, I do hear you when you say it’s not your scene. I get it.

So, if you really don’t want to go, don’t go, but, try not to get upset with your parents when they ask a few more times if you’re sure you don’t want to go. Your parents are asking out of love. They’re just trying to help you have fewer regrets down the road.

Another five, ten, or even twenty or twenty-five years from now, when you have a kid of your own getting ready to go to prom and you’re looking back at your life, perhaps you won’t have any regrets about not going to your prom if that’s what you’re choosing now. But you might find that you do have some regrets, and now it’s too late to do anything about it.

Hey, listen, I get it, James. The unknown is scary. There is a lot of social pressure in going to a prom.

There is a lot of financial pressure, too. But do you want to know something? Social and financial pressures are two common themes that will follow you throughout your entire life. They won’t go away. They will always be there. If you give in to them now, what will you do the next time, and the time after that, and the time after that?

So, in conclusion, James, no one is going to drag you to your prom. You’re going to have to do that yourself if you really want to.

But if you’ve truly thought this through, you’ll know in your heart if it will be worth the effort. Good luck, James. And if you do decide to go, I hope you have a great prom.
