Dear Granddaddy, my husband is driving me crazy. Jan P.
- A Wonderful Wife.
Well, Jan, I don’t doubt for a single second that your husband is driving you crazy. Nor do I doubt for a single second that you are a wonderful wife. You know, come to think of it, I probably drive my wonderful wife crazy, too. As a matter of fact, I’m certain that I drive my wonderful wife crazy, too. And do you want to know how I know that? Well, I know it because she actually told me this morning that I was driving her crazy.
Now, I’m not one hundred percent certain of this, but I’m pretty sure that the whole my-spouse-drives-me-crazy thing comes with the territory of marriage. The craziness is just what happens and what we do as human beings. And because it’s just a normal part of marriage and life, that’s probably why we say those wedding vows of “through the good and bad and sickness and health” when we get married. Somehow, the Church knew that these vows would be needed because eventually, we would drive each other crazy.
Now I think we can all agree that life is sometimes crazy sometimes, so I guess it only makes sense that spouses should align with the stars and add to that craziness sometimes, too.
Hey, just think about it, if things didn’t get crazy once in a while, we’d all be bored, right? In addition, believe it or not, sometimes more is actually better than less. Usually two is better than one. And I’m pretty sure that regardless of how crazy your husband may be driving you, Jan, sometimes the two of you working together is still better than just one of you working alone.
So, Jan, in closing, just do your best to enjoy the good, the bad, the craziness, and “everything else” that goes along with marriage.
As Carly Simon sang, these really are the good old days. Happiness doesn’t exist isolated in a vacuum, it is best shared, even if it is peppered with a little craziness sometimes.
