OUR VIEW: Terror from within

It’s no longer “Fortress America.” With increased frequency, terrorist-minded young men are finding their way to our cities, hatching plots and turning places of pleasure into places of death and destruction.

On Tuesday, a driver of a rented truck, since identified as an immigrant from Uzbekistan, plowed into a riverfront bike path near the World Trade Center, killing eight and seriously wounding 11. It was the same modus operandi we first became aware of in Nice, France in 2016, when 86 died and 458 were injured.

This kind of action has since become almost commonplace in some European cities, but here?

The New York City police are known as the most vigilant in the nation but it’s hard to protect people from an everyday object like a truck. Deliverymen steer their vehicles through the city’s busy streets, picking up their regular loads, dropping off necessities. How, then, do you defend against a fanatic who sees America as the enemy?
